Pre-Conference Workshop – Manual Therapy Integration Day

Join us for an intensive one-day pre-conference workshop focusing on the modern application of mobilisation (LVLA) and manipulation (HVLA) in clinical practice.

The day begins with a short theoretical session introducing current perspectives on mobilisation and manipulation, followed by a discussion on clinical reasoning and safety. Participants will then take part in practical workshops, working on selected body regions with a focus on mobilisation techniques and progression into manipulation.

The emphasis throughout the day is on clinical integration, safe application, and how manual therapy fits within a modern framework of exercise and rehabilitation.

Participants will receive an 8-hour CPD certificate of attendance.

Instructor

The workshop is led by Ewen McDonald, a registered osteopath and musculoskeletal specialist.

He is the director of multidisciplinary clinics in the Midlands and East London and combines manual therapy with evidence-based rehabilitation. A First Class Honours graduate from The College of Osteopaths, Ewen brings both clinical expertise and a strong passion for education.

Morten Sager, Ass. Prof and Senior Lecturer

“Epistemological Choices in Manual Medicine: Understanding Knowledge, Evidence and Clinical Practice”

Ass. Prof and senior lecturer of University of Gothenburg

There are good reasons to believe that evidence-based practice is needed: much useful knowledge never reaches—or reaches only after significant delay—patients, service users, or citizens. At the same time, efforts to implement evidence-based approaches in recent years have revealed fundamental problems. A certain one-sided view of knowledge has created difficulties in many organizations. Is it possible to strengthen learning in organizations without oversimplifying the complexities involved? Morten Sager will give a lecture on the basic assumptions that have shaped the emergence of the evidence movement—assumptions that do not always align with the settings in which evidence-based approaches are applied.

As an associate professor and senior lecturer, Sager conducts research and teaches on an ongoing basis. He developed and for ten years led the Master’s Programme in Evidence-Based Practice at the University of Gothenburg. The programme is aimed at both recent graduates and practicing professionals. His research has focused on how new knowledge is generated and how it contributes to shaping welfare in medicine, social services, and public health. A central part of Morten Sager’s work in collaboration with government agencies and regional actors within healthcare, social services, education, and public health is to foster reflection on how knowledge can be produced and used in different organizational contexts.

David Josefsson, Osteopath D.O and Physiotherapist MSc

“A Systems Perspective on Pain”

Osteopath D.O and physiotherapist MSc

David Josefsson is a swedish Osteopath and Physiotherapist with over 20 years of clinical experience. David has a Masters degree in Physiotherapy, has authored a book on musculoskeletal pain and released 60 podcast episodes on the subject. He has lectured for different healthcare professionals and manual therapists for over 13 years, on both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

In this lectures David borrows principles and concepts  from Complex systems theory to offer new perspectives on pain. We get to understand the pain system as a supersystem comprised of the neurological, endocrine and immune systems and are introduced to the relationship between pain and stress physiology.

Silvia Triay, Osteopath MSc and Physiotherapist BSc

“Osteopathic approaches to infertility: Myth, plausibility, or reality?”

Osteopath MSc and Physiotherapist BSc

Silvia Triay graduated in Osteopathy in 2004 at Escola d’Osteopatia de Barcelona (Spain), in collaboration with the European School of Osteopathy (UK). Previously, she had obtained her diploma in physiotherapy at Universitat Ramón Llull in Barcelona and her bachelor’s degree at the University of Manchester in 2000. She recently, completed a master´s degree of healthcare in Osteopathy, at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences in 2025 (Helsinki, Finland). Since 2004, she has been co-director of the Osteopatia Mallorca Clinic (Spain), providing her with more than 25 years of clinical experience with a particular focus in women´s health and infertility among other general conditions. Her master´s thesis investigated the osteopathic practitioner´s considerations in the infertility treatment through a qualitative study, and allowed her to observe and explore the knowledge, the clinical reasoning, the approaches, and the techniques used by osteopaths from different nationalities. She is passionate about her profession and dedicates plenty of time to her continuous career development to improve her approach to care.

This presentation will provide an overview of the impact of infertility among the population worldwide, its aetiology and treatment options, and the potential effect of osteopathic care on that field.

Different perspectives, considerations, approaches, and practices conducted by osteopathic practitioners on the management of patients with infertility will be presented and discussed to analyse the role of osteopaths treating patients with fertility issues.

The discussion will focus on the collaboration of osteopaths within a multidisciplinary team and the possibilities of developing this profession to provide support in both natural conception and in assisted reproduction.

Helena Löwen-Åberg, Physiotherapist

“Tinnitus – A Multidisciplinary View”

Helena Löwen-Åberg, a specialist physiotherapist in mental health and tinnitus, will speak about her work with patients experiencing tinnitus and sound sensitivity.

The lecture is based on the book Tinnitushjälpen: ett fysioterapeutiskt helhetsperspektiv, a combined reference and self-help guide written by the authors and specialist physiotherapists Helena Löwen-Åberg and Lina Ahlman. Published in June 2025, the book provides in-depth knowledge about tinnitus together with practical exercises and CBT-based strategies to reduce and better manage tinnitus — both psychologically and physically.

Tinnitushjälpen explains the underlying causes of tinnitus — hearing-related, somatically related, and anxiety- or depression-related — and what can be done from a holistic physiotherapeutic perspective. The book describes various CBT-based coping strategies, practical exercises, and patient stories that help those suffering from tinnitus or sound sensitivity regain their quality of life, say the authors and specialist physiotherapists Helena Löwen-Åberg and Lina Ahlman.

Helena has experienced the deep frustration felt by many people with tinnitus, as healthcare services often cannot offer sufficient help. This frustration became a driving force behind her decision to write this self-help book.

Helena Löwen-Åberg has 35 years of experience in clinical treatment and rehabilitation within primary care in Gothenburg, working with patients affected by tinnitus, sound sensitivity, dizziness, mental health conditions, and stress-related disorders. Her dedication to this field is also rooted in her own experiences of tinnitus, which has given her a deep understanding of the challenges faced by people living with the condition.

Tinnitushjälpen aims to reduce the suffering of those affected by tinnitus by showing how physiotherapy, combined with CBT, can be an effective tool in managing tinnitus as well as sound sensitivity. Through the book, Helena aims to convey hope while spreading knowledge and understanding to the reader.
